Putting the Kitchen Back together!

23 Apr

It has been awhile since our last post and we are tired! Renovation has now been about a month, we are almost there, but with busy jobs, a 2 year old, animals, and a messy house it has been somewhat trying at times.

My husband is amazing! He has been working after work every night to try to finish our kitchen. He never stops and never complains! What more could I ask for. 🙂 He has had a lot of help from his father, Mike, and every now and then our son, Aidan, wants to help out!

Aidan, Daddy, and Mike talking a break for a photo op. They have been busying trying to fix the ceiling where the soffit once was! BYE-BYE soffit, you made the ceilings seem lower than they actually are!

The ladder has become one of Aidan’s favorite new toys! (we are going to have to hide it after this project!)

We are hoping to finish the kitchen area within the next week. So there will be a lot of posts during the next two weeks! I’m getting soooo excited!

DIY How-To

7 Apr

This is Dan and I’ll be sharing my experiences with all of our projects. In the early days of our relationship,  Danielle found out that I was pretty handy and could do these projects without seriously hurting someone, and that was that. I had set myself up for a lifetime of projects and home improvements, so I started to take my DIY skills seriously.

I’ll be posting a lot of the things I have done and learned along the way, so enjoy and let me know what you think.

Demolition Begins……

7 Apr

And so the craziness begins…….  On Sunday Night, March 24th, we cleared out our kitchen, eating area, and family room.  First thing Monday morning, Dan and his father Mike begin demolition.  I got a very small piece of the action……

My husband gave me the first whack at the counter top and look at what was revealed!

Another beautiful specimen was found underneath the cabinets.

The upper cabinets and the soffit were the first things to go, as well as all of the cabinet doors and drawer fronts.  My husband will be refinishing all of the remaining cabinets and we will be doing open shelving instead of upper cabinets.

Our 1984 Kitchen Renovation– Before……

7 Apr

We moved into our 1984 contemporary style home in October of 2011.  Since then we have been doing small projects here and there,  trying to make our house feel more like a home.  I plan on adding some of our smaller projects to this blog as well, but need to get through this kitchen renovation first!  🙂

After a year and a half in our home we decided it was time to tackle the outdated kitchen.  My husband is a wonderful cook and the kitchen, which is not styled to our liking also has some issues of functionality as well.  So we decided instead of gutting it, which we’d like to do in the future, we would design and renovate it ourselves to make it prettier and more functional.  The home owner we purchased the house from did a good job of updating the tile flooring in the kitchen, especially once we saw the linoleum he had covered!  He also tried to make the counter tops more pleasing to the eye by tiling them as well.  They do look better than the bright orange laminate counter top we found underneath, but they are extremely hard to clean and we don’t have one continuous flat surface in the kitchen to prepare food.  They also put in a beige sink that while very large, stains very easily and no amount of scrubbing and use of cleaning products has helped!!!!  So it was time to make this kitchen our own!!!  The kitchen is part of one big room that includes an eat in portion and a family room.  We decided to empty out the entire room and repaint everything….. I will be keeping the same furniture, but will changing and adding some new decorative touches to make the whole room seem new and renovated!

Before Pictures:  The only thing we changed from the previous owner in these pictures was the paint color which used to be a fleshy color.   We painted the walls grey and added curtains and the new lighting above our table.

Our First Blog

We are new to blogging and a little apprehensive, but are going to give it a try!  A  little background should start us off nicely.  My husband and I met 6 years ago this weekend in a little bar called “Ake’s Place” in Burlington, Vermont.  We had a few drinks, threw some darts, and thought that would be the end of it (partially because I’m 11 years older than my husband 🙂 Little did we know or expect, that six years later we’d have a 2 and 1/2 year old son (Aidan), a dog (DJ), a cat (Leo), and our second home together.  We decided to create this blog to keep track of many things, but most importantly milestones as a couple, a family, and as do it yourselfers.  When we bought our first home together we thought it was perfect……well……. then……a year later we had redone 3 bathrooms and done a mini kitchen renovation, as well as a lot of painting and decorating!  It has become a passion that keeps us both busy and sometimes, much to my husbands dismay, is something that I cannot stop thinking about, dreaming about, talking about………etc. etc.  So here it goes…… our diary about our family, friends, and making our home our own.

Opps… almost forgot, I’m Danielle and my husband is Dan…. his parents call us D squared, hence the name!
